White blood cells in urine but no infection pregnancy
Would you like to know what lab results mean? Medical Tests Analyzer Software will explain and clarify your lab test report.
WBC in urine are a marker of infection if present for greater than 5 wbc per high power field.
Positive WBC test may indicative of: Bladder Infections; Urinary Tract Infection; Kidney Infection. Any disturbance and obstruction to the urinary system like bladder or kidney stone, tumor and so on can result in the occurrence of white blood cells in urine. Foremost WBC result in urinary tract infection. In some cases, if the white blood cells infect or contaminate urine externally, it might result in swelling of the genitals. Any kind of bacterial invasion is also signaled by white blood cells in urine. In a few situations, white blood cells in the urine can signify more serious disorders like bladder tumor or systemic lupus erythematosus, affecting the whole body. As regards prevention and treatment avoiding the occurrence of urinary tract infection as far as possible is the key. If at all such infection occurs, a dose of corresponding antibiotics can free the urinary tract off the infection. That will automatically lead to absence of white blood cells in the urine.
White Blood Cells in Urine
White blood cells (WBC, pus cells, leucocytes, LEU)
The main function of white blood cells is fighting various pathogenic agents invading our body. White blood cells are better detected in the first morning urine as it is more concentrated and has more sediment. White blood cells in urine are detected by a microscopic examination and are measured in the amount of white blood cells seen in 1 field of view.
There are usually only a few White blood cells in urine of a healthy person. The presence of Leukocytes in urine is referred to as Leucocyturia or Pyuria (pus in the urine). If urine contains large amounts of Pus cells, it becomes muddy, with flakes and fibers.
The increase number of White blood cells in urine usually indicates inflammation in the kidneys (pyelonephritis), urinary tract (cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis) or genitals. In rare cases, an increased amount of white blood cells in the urine may be due to renal disease in tuberculosis, amyloidosis, acute and chronic glomerulonephritis.
High levels of Leukocytes are found in the urine of women suffering from genital inflammatory diseases. Additional tests are needed for an accurate diagnosis.
White blood cells may enter the urine from the genital tract (the vagina in women and the urethra in men). Large amounts of leukocytes may be found in the genital tract of healthy individuals due to poor hygiene. Therefore, proper personal hygiene should be performed before collecting a urine sample.
In early childhood leukocyturia (White blood cells in the urine) may be caused by mild diseases due to the high sensitivity of the kidneys. In elderly patients, urinary tract infections (UTIs) may be caused by some functional inertness of the kidneys and intestinal atony.
White Blood Cells in the Urine During Pregnancy
Pregnancy causes hormonal and mechanical changes in the woman’s body. These changes increase the frequency of Urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy. Pregnant women are more likely to develop a kidney infection if they have a urinary infection. The presence of significant numbers of white blood cells in the urine without any of the typical symptoms of UTI is called Asymptomatic pyuria. Antibiotic treatment can reduce the risk of kidney infections in pregnant women who have a urine infection but show no symptoms of infection.

“Please wait here,” said the liaisons, in unison. Turning to look at them, I caught the tails of sly smiles slithering from their twin faces – once again blank and impassive as our eyes met.
“How long?” I asked.
In a monotone duet they replied, “Long enough.”
I wasn’t buying their calculated coyness, nor the eerie twin act, and I let them know as much by crossing my arms and applying my trademark smirk (for all the good it did in that shadowed purgatory). “Tell His Holiness that I’ll see him now. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna’ spend any time in this pit.”
Behind me, from the thickest of shadows in that fetid cell a slow, almost inaudible hissing issued; and the louder sound of something large and. . . wet unfolding from the darkness. A moist plop reached my ears and what might be described as my hackles rose straight up. I didn’t look but concluded, “And I won’t be damned.”
The liaisons, falling easily before my superior will did not hesitate. “Very well,” they intoned, “follow us.”
Stepping forward, I reached behind me, and keeping my gaze fixed straight ahead as the sound of a large, not unviscous mass shuffled loathsomely across the tiles, closed the door.

Leukocytes in Urine
May 24, 2015 admin 0 Comments
Presence of Leukocytes in urine is generally a normal condition. However, it turns serious when the amount of these Leukocytes present in urine increases drastically. Excessive release of these cells in the urine can be an indication of underlying UTI or Urinary Tract Infection.
Urinary system is made up of ureters, bladder, urethra and kidney. If presence of leukocytes is detected through urinalysis but no nitrates are seen then it may suggest that patient is suffering from some kind of infection or urinary system.
Leukocytes in urine – normal range
Leukocytes are White blood cells or WBC. These cells fight infection in the body but when they are present in urine they commonly serve as a sign for bacterial infection. In normal cases small amount of leukocytes cells which are damaged and old are expelled through urine. The normal range of these cells present in urine is 0 to 10 lev/vl. You may what to consider serious medical help if the level of these cells is equal to or more than 20 lev/vl.
To check the level of leukocytes in urine it is essential to test the urine of the affected individual. Urinalysis is a common test suggested for most people which can help in detecting the level of leukocytes in urine. If these cells are present in access in the sample provided, then perhaps kidney and bladder are susceptible to damages. There are several home tests which can help you determine presence of these cells and protein nitrites in urine. However, providing a sample for laboratory test is best as it provides more details on health of the patient. The given sample would be used to perform three different tests which are microscope, chemical test and visual test. Microscopic test or chemical tests are used to determine the urine leukocytes level.
Causes of Leukocytes in Urine
Kidney infections such as pyelonephritis may contribute to cause increased number of white blood cells in the urine. This infection occurs in the urinary tract and may metastasize to kidneys. The risk of such infection is common in people who suffer from weakened immune system. People who use catheter for long time are also at increased risk of suffering from this condition. Bladder infection or inflammation of Urinary Tract may also cause excessive release of leukocytes in the urine.
Sometimes these cells may appear in urine due to blockage in the urinary system that can cause hematuria, a condition in which blood is detected in urine. Such blockage may occur due to bladder stone, pelvic tumor, kidney stone, injury, prostate hypertrophy or occurrence of foreign bodies in the urinary tract.
During pregnancy females may experience presence of leukocytes in the urine which is said to be a common occurrence during this phase. There are chances that biological alterations may also cause increase in white blood cells level. Protein contamination from vagina may also lead to such urine state. If such condition persists and the cells are present in anomalous amount then it is better to consult a doctor and undergo diagnosis for any bladder condition.
Sexual intercourse may also make you prone to this condition. The bacteria present in one person may get transferred to the urethra that may lead to infections. Weakening of the bladder may also cause increased presence of leukocytes in the urine. Such cases appear when urine is held for longer time. This causes the bladder to overstretch and become weak. This may cause bladder to become incompetent to empty itself. The urine is then left in the bladder which can lead to bacterial infection.
Symptoms of Leukocytes in urine
- Inflammation of the kidney
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Bladder tumor
- Tremor and fever
- Frequent urination
- Occurrence of blood in urine
- Experiencing burning of painful sensation while urination
- Smelly and cloudy appearing urine
Leukocytes in urine treatment significantly depend on the cause of the condition. In case if infection is determined to be the reason behind increased amount of Leukocytes in the urine then antibiotics are prescribed to treat the condition. Antibiotics are in fact the first line of treatment against infections. Along with the treatment one should try to avoid aggravation of underlying infection. Try to avoid urinary tract infection by taking suggestions from your doctor. In some cases wherein the infection becomes extremely severe one may have to be hospitalized.
Presence of leukocytes in urine due to urinary tract infection is said to be common in women than in men. The condition may range for mild cystitis to severe bladder to kidney infection. Doctor will usually recommend you to maintain hygiene to avoid infection from metastasizing and preventing it if not affected. Personal hygiene is extremely important in this case. In case if weak immune system is detected then supplements of vitamin B and C can help in improving the immune system to fight infections.
