Google will keep in secret the number of search quality algorithms

How many search quality algorithms does Google use? This question was put to the John Mueller, the company’s employee during the last video conference with webmasters.

The question was:

“When you mention Google’s quality algorithm, how many algorithms do you use?”

Mueller responded the following:

“Usually we do not talk about how many algorithms we use. We publicly state that we have 200 factors when it comes to scanning, indexing and ranking.

Generally, the number of algorithms is a casual number. For instance, one algorithm can be used to display a letter on the search results page. Therefore, we believe that counting the exact number of algorithms that Google uses is not something that is really useful [for optimizers].

From this point of view, I can’t tell you how many algorithms are involved in Google search.”

Gary Illyes shares his point of view on how important referential audit is

At the Brighton SEO event that took place last week, Google rep called Gary Illyes shared his opinion about the importance of auditing the website’s link profile. This information was reported by Jennifer Slagg in the TheSEMPost blog.

Since Google Penguin was modified into real-time update and started ignoring spam links instead of imposing sanctions on websites, this has led to a decrease of the value of auditing external links.

According to Gary Illyes, auditing of links is not necessary for all websites at the present moment.

“I talked to a lot of SEO specialists from big enterprises about their business and their answers differed. These companies have different opinions on the reason why they reject links.

I don’t think that helding too many audits makes sense, because, as you noted, we successfully ignore the links, and if we see that the links are of an organic nature, it is highly unlikely that we will apply manual sanctions to a website.

In case your links are ignored by the “Penguin”, there is nothing to worry about.

I’ve got my own website, which receives about 100,000 visits a week. I have it for 4 years already and I do not have a file named Disavow. I do not even know who is referring to me.

Thus, in the case when before a website owner was engaged in buying links or using other prohibited methods of link building, then conducting an audit of the reference profile and rejecting unnatural links is necessary in order to avoid future manual sanctions. It is important to remember that rejecting links can lead to a decrease in resource positions in the global search results, since many webmasters often reject links that actually help the website, rather than doing any harm to it.

Therefore, referential audits are needed if there were any violations in the history of the resource. They are not necessary for many website owners and it is better to spend this time on improving the website itself, says Slagg.

Googlebot still refuses to scan HTTP/2

During the last video conference with webmasters Google rep called John Mueller said that Googlebot still refrains to scan HTTP.

The reason is that the crawler already scans the content that fast, so the benefits that the browser receives (web pages loading time is decreased) are not that important.

“No, at the moment we do not scan HTTP / 2. We are still investigating what we can do about it. In general, the difficult part is that Googlebot is not a browser, so it does not get the same speed effects that are observed within a browser when implementing HTTP / 2. We can cache data and make requests in a different way than a regular browser. Therefore, we do not see the full benefits of scanning HTTP / 2.

But with more websites implementing push notification feature, Googlebot developers are on the point of adding support for HTTP in future. ”

It should be recalled that in April 2016, John Mueller said that the use of the HTTP / 2 protocol on the website does not directly affect the ranking in Google, but it improves the experience of users due to faster loading speed of the pages. Therefore, if you have a change, it is recommended to move to this protocol.

Google does not check all spam reports in manual mode

Google employee named John Mueller stated that the search team does not check all spam reports manually during the last video conference with webmasters.

The question to Mueller was the following:

“Some time ago we sent a report on a spam, but still have not seen any changes. Do you check each and every report manually?”

No, we do not check all spam reports manually. “

Later Mueller added:

“We are trying to determine which reports about spam have the greatest impact, it is on them that we focus our attention and it is their anti-spam team that checks manually, processes and, if necessary, applies manual sanctions. Most of the other reports that come to us is just information that we collect and can use to improve our algorithms in the future. At the same time, he noted that small reports about violations of one page scale are less prioritized for Google. But when this information can be applied to a number of pages, these reports become more valuable and are prior to be checked.

As for the report processing time, it takes some considerable time. As Mueller explained, taking measures may take “some time”, but not a day or two.

It should be recalled that in 2016, Google received about 35 thousand messages about spam from users every month. About 65% of all the reports led to manual sanctions.

Google will no longer trust WoSign and StarCom certificates

Google reports that in the coming months, it will completely stop cooperation with certificates issued by WoSign and StarCom certification centers. The change will take effect with the release of Chrome 61, which is expected in mid-September. It will affect the certificates issued before October 21, 2016, the period of validity of which has not yet expired.

Last year, Google Chrome 56 stopped trusting the certificates from WoSign and StarCom, released later October 21, 2016. After the release of Chrome 57, the browser partially stopped trusting the old certificates. An exception was made for websites that are among the first million in the Alexa rating. From now on, all certificates from these centers will be banned.

“Starting with Chrome 61, the white list will be removed, which will lead to a complete cessation of trust in the existing root certificates of WoSign and StarCom and all certificates that they have given out. Websites that still use certificates from StarCom and WoSign should urgently consider replacing them, so as to minimize any inconveniences to Chrome users,” reports Google.

It should be recalled Mozilla announced about freezing its cooperation with WoSign and StartCom in September 2016. Starting with the Firefox 51 the certificates are considered to be invalid. At the same time, the support of certificates issued before October 21, 2016 is still preserved.

Google adds tags for recipes, videos and products in the image search

Google added tags for recipes, videos, products and GIF to the image search results. Now when searching for images, users will immediately see which type of content the individual results are related to.

The Google rep commented on the new feature saying the following:

“These badges will help you find those images that involve additional actions or contain more detailed information.”

To display a label on a website page, appropriate marking of structured data should be added: for recipes, goods or video. GIF-images Google algorithms will recognize and mark automatically, thus, markup is not needed for them. New badges will not always be displayed just like extended snippets. Filling in the fields for the recommended properties of the markup increases the chances of getting them.

Google also updated its structured data verification tool. Now it processes markups for images.

It should be recalled that Google started showing videos and recipes in the search results for pictures starting from last month.

Google is speeding up the mobile pages in the ranking

Google is changing its approach to assessing the speed of page loading. In the near future, the ranking will take into account the speed of mobile pages and not desktop. This was reported by the Goole search representative Gary Illyes at the SMX Advanced 2017 conference.

As you know, at the moment Google measures only the loading speed of the desktop pages. These data are used both in desktop ranking and mobile.

However, mobile speed is more important for Google. Therefore, it was decided to make changes to the search algorithm. This approach is already under consideration.

Illyes also stressed upon the fact that Google will actively inform webmasters about any changes before launching the mobile-first index. So not to make a surprise for specialists.

Earlier it was reported that Google has not been planning to take into account the downloading speed for mobile pages in the ranking.

Publishers have found a way to beat Facebook’s ranking algorithms

The AdAge Edition noted that publishers have found a way to beat Facebook’s ranking algorithms. They began to attach short videos in MP4 format instead of pictures; since videos re usually given priority in the users’ tapes.

New tactics are used by large publishers, such as BuzzFeed, and smaller ones, among them is ForShitsAndGiggles.

For example, the 48-second “video” published by BuzzFeed has received more than 1.4 million views in just a couple of weeks:

Other examples also include short videos that last only a few seconds.

The Facebook representative in the AdAge commentary says that the social network does not prioritize the video before other types of publications in the news line. But if the user usually interacts with the video, he will often see posts of this format in his tape:

“We are constantly improving the news line to show you the most relevant stories, and prevent attempts to deceive the system.”

Nevertheless, Russ Torres, the USA Today Network vice president of video content and strategy believes that in fact Facebook promotes the video in line.

BuzzFeed and ForShitsAndGiggles have not yet commented on this aspect.

AdWords launches a new keyword-level bidding interface

Google AdWords users all around the world noticed that is a new keyword-level bidding interface is launching soon.

Google will show recommended bids for different ad positions on the page, even if the bid simulator for this keyword is not available.

Some phases were also changed a little bit. Instead of the “top of the page” is now replaced by “over all organic results”; instead of “first position” the tab “over all other ads” will be now used.

There was no official launch announcement yet.

Let us remind you that Google AdWords changed algorithm of work of the Optimizer of the price for conversion last week. Earlier this tool could raise the maximum bid for prospective clicks by no more than 30%. Now this restriction is lifted.

Google Drive will become a backup tool

Google plans to make a backup tool out of Google’s cloud service. Soon it will be available to track and archive files inside any folder the user specifies. This can also be the contents of the entire hard disk or the Documents folder.

The backup function will be available from June 28 after the release of the new Backup and Sync application, which is the latest version of Google Drive for Mac / PC.

It is assumed that users will have the opportunity to open and edit files located in the cloud. It is still not clear whether they will be able to synchronize information between multiple PCs using Disk as an intermediary.

Since the auto update to Backup and Sync is not planned, the company recommends installing a new application immediately after being released.

The new feature is primarily targeted at corporate Google Drive users.

Sternum Pain

Sternum pain or Breastbone pain can be caused due to a variety of reasons. Sternum, commonly known as breastbone is a flat bone that is located in the centre of your chest directly below the collar bone. You can easily locate whether the breastbone pain is indeed in the region of the sternum, by tracing the sternum in the centre as it is connected to your ribs with cartilage. Sternum pain can be caused by a variety of reasons and you should consult a physician if you suspect that you are feeling pain around the region of the sternum.

Why Does My Sternum Hurt?

Before your doctor looks into the real cause for your sternum pain, you might want to be aware of some of the common causes for breastbone pain. Pain under the breastbone or pain in the chest bone can be caused by multiple causes like esophagitis, acute pancreatitis, muscle strain or indigestion therefore the treatment for sternum pain should be carefully addressed to the cause which is producing it.

The location of the pain also gives a clue about its cause. Pain in the sternum area may present as upper or lower sternum pain or pain behind the sternum. When you feel pain below the breastbone region, it could be due to some disorder in the abdominal region. However abdominal pain may also manifest higher up as a feeling of discomfort or pain behind the sternum.

Other than this, the nature of pain can also lead to diagnosing the exact cause of sternum pain. Whether it is a mild pain which feels like a sore sternum or an excruciating sharp pain, they can have widely different causes and treatment modalities.

Image showing the location of the Sternum area

If you are experiencing breastbone pain, the problem can be of an acute nature and may not last for long or it may be of a chronic nature which means it will be long lasting.

Causes of Sternum Pain

Although the most common symptom of angina or heart attack is also chest pain, it is markedly different from pain behind the sternum. A physician can easily differentiate other sternum pain causes from cardiac pain. So pain in or around the sternal region is not always a cause of concern but it is always advised to consult your physician before reaching a conclusion.

Here are a few causes for breastbone pain:

This is a condition of inflammation that occurs at the junction of the upper ribs and the cartilage resulting in sternum pain. This pain can sometimes mimic that of a heart attack so here are a few symptoms that can help you differentiate between the two:

  • Tenderness or discomfort that can be reproduced every time you press on the joint between the ribs and the cartilage
  • The breastbone pain is aggravated upon movement especially of the affected joint.
  • Pain that worsens every time you cough or take in a deep breath
  • The nature of the sternum pain is sharp and localized to the joint between the ribs and the cartilage.

Treatment : Pain due to costochondritis can be treated by the help of a conservative approach or using medication prescribed by your doctor. When using a conservative approach, you can use ice packs or heat locally to relieve the pain. However using a painkiller like naproxen or ibuprofen after advice from your physician can also help reduce the inflammation and help relieve the soreness and discomfort of sternum pain. As a precaution, you should tend to avoid unnecessary activities or exercises that tend to aggravate the breastbone pain.

Sternum pain due to pleurisy is caused by the inflammation of the pleura surrounding the lungs. So pleurisy causes the inner walls of the chest to inflame due to many chest or lung condition resulting in breastbone pain. Here are a few symptoms that can help you recognize that the pain is indeed due to pleurisy only:

  • Severe sternum pain or chest pain when you inhale but there is no pain in between breaths
  • The pain is accompanied by dry cough
  • You will experience shortness of breath along with the symptom of breastbone pain
  • The pain in this condition is also accompanied with chills, fever and sore sternum area.
  • Other minor symptoms include nausea and appetite loss.

Treatment : Pleurisy can be caused due to different reasons therefore the treatment strategy also depends on the underlying cause. For example if sternum ache due to pleurisy is caused by pneumonia then antibiotics may be able to treat the underlying problem effectively. Some over the counter anti-inflammatory medication may also help relieve the symptoms of sternum pain. Taking rest and lying down on the painful side of the body can also reduce the intensity of breastbone pain.

3. Sternoclavicular joint pain

Sternoclavicular joint is present at the top of the chest where the collar bones are connected to the sternum on both sides. Sternum pain caused by problems in the sternoclavicular joint are usually a result of trauma. The severity of the breastbone pain may vary from mild to severe depending on the intensity of the injury that caused it. A serious case of chest bone pain may occur if your sternoclavicular joints are dislocated either anteriorly or posteriorly. Here are a few symptoms that you may experience other that severe chest bone pain if you have suffered a sternoclavicular joint injury:

  • Severe pain localized to the point where the sternoclavicular joint is situated along with breastbone pain at the time of injury.
  • Other than the symptom of pain, the displaced clavicle or collar bone may result in symptoms like hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, breathing difficulty or a choking sensation.
  • More chronically you may experience a swollen sternum at the top or crepitus while movement.
  • The pain felt in the chest may be aggravated in a position when you try to reach across your body.

Treatment : As a form of temporary conservative management icing around the region of sternum pain may help relieve the inflammation. But use of a sling for immobilization and pain medications are required as advised by your physician as a form of treatment. Some operative measures are also available although they are not usually preferred to treat this form of breastbone pain.

Your collar bone is also located at the top of your chest in the reason between the shoulder girdle and the sternum and is connected to the arm. Trauma to the collarbone can be a common cause of sternum pain. This kind of pain is usually caused by trauma to the collar bone as a result of an injury or fall in early childhood. Here are a few signs and symptoms of breastbone pain due to collarbone trauma:

  • Shoulder sags down and forward
  • Severe pain in the arm along with pain in the sternum leads to an inability to raise the shoulder
  • When you attempt to raise the shoulder, you will feel a grinding sensation along with the sternum pain
  • Bruising, swelling, soreness and discomfort may occur around the area where your sternum hurts

Treatment : You should immediately consult your physician if you experience sternum pain or any of these symptoms. Your physician will offer you a correct diagnosis and sternum pain treatment to help alleviate the pain in your breat and correctly get the collarbone fixed.

This kind of sore breastbone trauma is usually caused by a direct hit to the sternum using a lot of force. The sternum may be in a lot of pieces as a result of the fracture so this may be a cause of extreme pain in the chest bone. Here are a few symptoms that are specific to pain caused by a fracture:

  • Severe sternum pain in the centre of the chest
  • Pain that worsens on breathing
  • Pain that worsens on movement
  • Chest bruise at the site of the sternum pain due to the trauma
  • Difficulty breathing due to the severity of the breastbone pain and trauma

Treatment : Analgesics and anti-inflammatory medication provided by your doctor may help alleviate the symptoms of the sternum pain. You should also refrain from strenuous physical activity and preferably restrict all forms of physical activity till the fracture heals and the sternum pain subsides.

6. Heartburn or indigestion

Heart burn can be a very important cause of lower sternum pain or pain under sternum after eating. This may be a result of GERD, helicobacter pylori infection or gastroeosophageal reflux disease. Moreover sternum pain during pregnancy is also due to heartburn caused by the pressure from the enlarging uterus. Here are a few symptoms that may help you differentiate sternum pain due to indigestion from other causes:

  • The pain is episodic in nature and situated in the upper abdominal or lower sterna region
  • The pain is usually described as being burning in character
  • The pain behind the breastbone occurs after taking a heavy spicy meal or may occur on an empty stomach during the night
  • Pain worsens upon lying down or bending over
  • This type of pain is relieved by taking medication to reduce stomach acidity or by eating food

Treatment : Over the counter medication like antacids, proton pump inhibitors to reduce acid production can provide relief to the sternum pain caused in this condition. In case of infection caused by a bacteria caused helicobacter pylori, your doctor may be able prescribe medications to help the infection and your stomach heal.

Pain due to esophagitis can be caused by irritation or inflammation to the esophagus. This is usually caused by stomach acids flowing back into the esophagus due to reflux disease. Factors that increase a likelihood of esophagitis include smoking, alcohol, vomiting and as a side effect of some medication. If you suspect that you are experiencing stomach pain due to esophagitis then you must look for the following symptoms:

  • Upper abdominal pain or pain under the sternum
  • Pain under the sternum that may cause difficulty swallowing
  • Acid brash or a bitter taste in your mouth along with the breastbone pain in the chest
  • Hoarseness in voice and cough

Treatment : A diagnosis of esophagitis can be confirmed with the help of endoscopic examination. Treatment for pain due to esophagitis would include antacids or other medications that help lower stomach acid levels. Antibiotics can be prescribed to treat infection causing the breastbone pain due to esophagitis. As a precaution and to prevent aggravation of sternum pain, smoking and alcohol intake should be avoided.

Sternum pain can also be caused because of various respiratory disorders like pneumonia, lung abscess, asthma and bronchitis causing severe pain. The symptoms that can help you link your sternum pain to respiratory disorders include:

  • Severe pain under the sternum or pain behind the sternum
  • The pain will be accompanied by cough and difficulty in breathing
  • In case of breastbone pain due to pneumonia, sternum pain will also be accompanied with a fever

Treatment : Treatment for respiratory causes of sternum pain will depend on appropriate physical examination by your doctor and laboratory results of tests like a chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests pointing out the underlying cause. Treatment will be catered the diagnosis obtained by your physician and can include antibiotic therapy, bronchodilators and deep breathing exercises.

9. Other causes of sternum pain

Other factors that may contribute to breastbone pain include excessive belching, a hiatus hernia, acute pancreatitis and stomach ulcers. Other causes may be pain due to injured ribs excessive exercising, overstraining of the abdominal or chest musculature and osteomyelitis. Cancer of the breast, lung and bone may present in the form of sternum pain. Especially if you observe a mass around the region of an aching sternum or a swollen sternum, your physician might want to consider the possibility of a severe condition called chondrosarcoma. It is always advised that you consult a physician if you suspect that you are suffering from symptoms of sternum pain that may point towards any serious conditions mentioned above.

Diagnosis of Sternum Pain

There are many possible causes of sternum pain and a physician may obtain several differential diagnosis based on your history and his examination findings. But in order to confirm the findings, a few laboratory tests are very helpful to single out the most appropriate cause of your pain. These diagnostic tests for sternum pain include:

  • Blood tests
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • Chest X-ray
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Computed tomography scan (CT)
  • ECG and stress testing

When to see a Doctor?

Although conservative pain management by icing the region or over the counter pain medication may provide relief for the less serious causes of sternum pain, it is strongly advised that you consult a doctor if you experience any one of the following symptoms:

  • Sternum pain accompanied by difficulty in breathing
  • Breastbone pain that is accompanied by pain radiating to the arm or jaw
  • Sternum pain aggravated by activity like running or walking up a flight of stairs
  • Experiencing sternum pain with other symptoms like difficulty breathing, high fever or signs of infection like pus, redness or swelling.

Upper sternum pain pregnancy

Many people focus on pre-natal lower back pain. However, there are also a fair number of women who experience upper back pain (thoracic spine). A woman has to face some discomfort during pregnancy. Experiencing back pains is one of the most common discomforts that women experience during this time. At times, back pains can be rather annoying. In the early stages of pregnancy, experiencing lower back pains is common. However, women can experience upper back pain during the late stage of pregnancy when the uterus attains a significant weight and reaches the maximum size. This pain is mostly experienced during the third trimester of the pregnancy. The third trimester of a pregnancy is characterized by tremendous changes that take place to prepare the body for childbirth.

What Causes Upper Back Pain During Pregnancy?

There are a number of reasons why women experience upper back pain during pregnancy. The level of pregnancy hormones rises once you are pregnant. These hormones cause the muscles and ligaments in your stomach and back area to loosen and relax. The reason why your muscles relax and loosen is that they can make room for the baby that is growing. More pressure is put on your ribs as the weight of the uterus and the baby increases. A woman also gains about 25% more weight when she is pregnant. All this extra pressure and weight may cause weakening of muscles, which results in upper back pain.

Another reason why pregnant women experience upper back pain is because the center of gravity is shifted by the baby that is growing inside you, and extra weight can cause your body to lean forward. This causes your back muscles to work harder to maintain the balance of your body. Breasts becoming bigger may be another cause of upper back pain during pregnancy. Due to the added weight and the bigger size of your breasts, your shoulders may be pulled down.

Causes of Pain in the Upper Abdomen While Pregnant

Abdominal discomfort occurs commonly in pregnancy. The growing uterus, an active fetus and shifted intestines can all contribute to abdominal discomfort. But pain in the upper abdomen can be caused by problems beyond the usual pregnancy aches and pains, though less serious concerns can also be to blame. Call your medical practitioner to determine the source of upper abdominal pain in pregnancy and get guidance for treatment.

Video of the Day

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease — also called GERD or heartburn, due to the burning pain it causes in the upper abdomen or chest — is common in pregnancy, affecting up to 80 percent of pregnant women, a 2012 “BMC Gastroenterology” article reports. Other symptoms seen with GERD include a sour taste in the mouth or regurgitation; symptoms are generally worse after eating. As pregnancy progresses, you are more likely to develop GERD as the growing uterus puts more pressure on the intestinal tract. GERD can also result from decreased muscle tone in the lower esophageal sphincter, which separates the stomach from the esophagus and keeps undigested food from entering the esophagus. Slower-than-normal transit times through the gastrointestinal tract due to hormonal changes may also cause GERD. Certain foods may worsen this disorder, although no foods are universally associated with GERD. Ask your doctor before taking antacids or other medications.

Gallstones

Gallbladder problems can flare up during pregnancy, with around 10 percent of women developing gallstones at this time, according to the December 2009 issue of “World Journal of Gastroenterology.” Gallbladder issues arise because cholesterol secretion into bile increases in pregnancy, leading to the formation of cholesterol crystals that eventually form gallstones. The gallbladder also empties more slowly during pregnancy, which encourages sludge buildup in the gallbladder that can lead to gallstones. Symptoms include pain in the upper right abdomen, especially after eating a meal high in fat. If gallstones needs to be removed, your doctor might prefer to do this in the second trimester, when the risk of complications is lower and the surgery easier to perform than in the third trimester, when the uterus is larger.

Pancreatic Problems

The pancreas and the gallbladder share a common drainage duct. Because of this, a blockage in the duct caused by gallstones can also cause problems in the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, increases in frequency during pregnancy but remains a rare disorder, affecting just 3 in 10,000 pregnant women, according to the December 2009 issue of “World Journal of Gastroenterology.” You may experience pain in your upper abdomen that wraps around your back. Leaning forward may decrease the pain. The increased incidence of gallstones in pregnancy accounts for approximately 70 percent of all cases of acute pancreatitis in pregnancy. Having high triglyceride levels or abusing alcohol can also cause acute pancreatitis. Any severe abdominal pain in pregnancy merits immediate medical evaluation.

Preeclampsia of Pregnancy

Preeclampsia can lead to serious pregnancy complications for mother and baby. In Western regions, it affects between 2 and 7 percent of all pregnancies, with first pregnancies more commonly afflicted than subsequent ones, according to a 2005 review in “Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology.” Being older than 40, having long-standing hypertension or diabetes or being obese also puts pregnant women at greater risk for developing preeclampsia, which develops in the latter half of pregnancy. Classic signs of this disorder include upper right quadrant abdominal pain, visual disturbances, facial swelling, headache, protein in the urine and high blood pressure. See your practitioner immediately if you develop symptoms of preeclampsia, as this condition can be life threatening for you and your baby.
